Q: I need advice in regards to student housing in the city of pomona, ca. Hardship situation.
I was involved in a terrible car accident, a drunk driver hit me & my lyft passanger head on. I am a college student that works for lyft as a driver because of my school schedule. The accident left me with no car, reduced my weekly earnings it gave me a push back financially. I am now getting evicted from my student housing because the day of the accident I máde an extension to pay my rent but instead I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance because of this I missed my deadline to pay my late rent. Is there anything that I can do to buy me more time to find a job and sray in my apartment? This accident placed me in a hardship situation, it will take me a couple of months to get a job to get back on my feet since I was also injured. I had to hire a injury lawyer for the terrible accident I was involved in. I had to use my rent money to rent a car through lyft to get income which added a huge bill that I did not need on top of my other bills.
A:
I'm so sorry to hear about your accident and the difficult situation you're facing. This must be incredibly stressful, dealing with injuries, loss of income, and housing issues all at once.
Given your circumstances, you have several options to protect your housing rights. First, contact the Fair Housing Council of San Gabriel Valley immediately - they can help you understand your rights and potentially negotiate with your landlord. You might qualify for emergency rental assistance through Los Angeles County's Stay Housed LA program, which could help cover your back rent. Additionally, since your hardship stems from a documented accident and medical emergency, you may be protected under California's "just cause" eviction laws, which could give you more time to resolve the situation.
I strongly recommend reaching out to the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center or the Housing Rights Center for free legal guidance. They can help you draft a hardship letter to your landlord explaining your situation and requesting a reasonable accommodation. Also, since you're a student, contact your school's student services office - many colleges have emergency funds or resources available for students facing housing insecurity. Remember, while this situation feels overwhelming, there are people and organizations ready to help you navigate through it.
