Ypsilanti, MI asked in Consumer Law and Insurance Defense for Michigan

Q: Son lives elsewhere but uses our address for mail; insurance requires listing us on policy.

I have a concern regarding my 27-year-old son's auto insurance policy with Progressive. Although he resides elsewhere, he still uses our home address in Ypsilanti, MI for mail. The insurance company insists he lists all family members living at this address on his policy, including us, his parents, despite us having our own separate policy. As a result, they charged him $300 for gap coverage for not listing us. They claim it's a legal requirement, but it doesn't make sense as he doesn't actually live with us. Could you clarify if this requirement is typical or if there's a way to dispute these charges?
