Q: Is a car dealer liable for altering contract terms and financial info in NJ?
I agreed to purchase a car for $7,500 and have a signed contract for this amount. However, the base price was increased to $7,999 to include repairs, and my monthly income was nearly doubled in the contract with the financing institution to get the car financed. I've been making payments on the car. I tried discussing this discrepancy with the car dealer, but they refused to listen. Additionally, I was involved in an accident with the car. Is the car dealer liable for selling the car at a higher price than agreed upon and possibly altering the financial information?

A: You need to have a consultation with an experienced civil litigation attorney to determine how to best handle this matter. You should expect to pay for 1/2 an hour of attorney time. The dealer (based on your statements has violated the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act (which entitles you to triple damages plus attorney fees). This dealer has also apparently violated other laws. The attorney after the consultation will be able to provide you with the best way to proceed.
