Q: Need assistance with demand letter to city for property neglect due to altered water flow.

I am seeking assistance in drafting a demand letter to address the neglect of my property by the city. Years ago, the city altered the water flow on my street, failing to provide proper drainage. As a result, rainwater runs down my driveway, eroding my property down a hill. In March, this erosion caused my garage to detach and fall into a hole, with ongoing erosion threatening my home. I have collected extensive evidence, including photos, documents, mine subsidence, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports, and videos. My neighbor is experiencing a similar issue with her patio. I wish to demand that the city corrects the water flow situation and seeks reparations, including fixing my hill and rebuilding my garage. How should I proceed with this demand?

A: An Illinois attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for a month. It could be difficult for attorneys to offer meaningful instruction in drafting a demand letter within the brief format of a Q & A forum - that could be why the question remained open. A starting point could be to reach out to law firms to discuss their terms and arrangements with such a letter. I'm sorry about your ordeal. It looks like you've been methodical and diligent in gathering evidence - that could be valuable to a law firm. Attorneys here can't solicit with offers to write a letter, but there is a tab above, "Find a Lawyer," which lists Illinois attorneys by practice area and region. Additionally, local and state bar associations usually have attorney referral sections. Those resources are outside this Q & A forum, so any terms would be between you and the law firms you reached out to. Good luck
