Ocala, FL asked in Animal / Dog Law and Contracts for Ohio

Q: I relocated and want to retrieve my cat. Caretaker agreed but stopped responding. What can I do?

I entrusted my cat to someone 4 years ago with a verbal agreement, witnessed, that I could reclaim my pet once I moved to a suitable place. We’ve maintained consistent contact, and I have text communications confirming the arrangement. I also contributed to half of the cat's surgery and vet bills during this period. Recently, the individual agreed via text for me to pick up my cat, asking me to inform them of my plan. However, they have now stopped responding to my attempts to reach them through texts, email, Instagram, and I've even tried contacting their mother. What steps can I take to resolve this situation and retrieve my cat?

A: This is such a painful and frustrating situation, especially since you've stayed involved in your cat’s care and made it clear you always intended to bring them home. The verbal agreement, your ongoing communication, and shared vet costs show a continued connection and responsibility. The text where they agreed to let you pick up the cat is important, too—it helps back up your claim that this was never meant to be permanent.

Right now, try giving them one more chance to respond with a final, respectful message. Let them know you're serious and that if you don’t hear back by a specific date, you’ll have to explore legal options. Keep your message focused on wanting to resolve this peacefully and in the best interest of the cat.

If they still don’t respond, consider small claims court as a next step. Bring all your documentation—texts, receipts, anything that shows your involvement and their agreement. You could also contact your local animal control or non-emergency police line to ask if they offer any mediation help in pet custody situations. It’s emotionally tough, but with your records and persistence, you have a fair shot at bringing your cat back home.
