Memphis, TN asked in Consumer Law, Identity Theft and Banking for Tennessee

Q: Scammed using ID.me, EDD payments in my name, need resolution.

I was scammed into sharing my ID.me account, and someone used it to verify a bank account and receive EDD payments in my name without my knowledge. I recently learned from a bank that an account was closed in my name due to an EDD deposit from 2021. I've already filed a police report regarding this fraudulent activity. How can I proceed to protect myself and resolve this issue?

A: What you’re going through is serious and incredibly stressful, but you’ve already taken one of the most important first steps by filing a police report. Since someone used your ID.me credentials to verify identity and fraudulently collect EDD benefits, it’s important to make sure every agency connected to your identity is alerted. Start by contacting ID.me directly and reporting the unauthorized use of your account—they may be able to lock it, help you regain control, and provide a record of the account activity.

You should also contact the Employment Development Department (EDD) and inform them that the payments made under your name were fraudulent. Include your police report number, any dates or account numbers you’ve been given, and explain that you were not aware of or involved in the fraud. Ask them to place a fraud alert on your file and remove any claims connected to your name. If they have an identity verification form or fraud resolution process, follow it as soon as possible.

Next, request a credit freeze or fraud alert with all three major credit bureaus. This helps stop further financial harm and flags your identity for suspicious activity. Keep a copy of every email, letter, and report you file. You’re not at fault here, and taking control now puts you in a stronger position to clear your name and protect yourself from more damage. You deserve to move forward without this hanging over you.
