Gilbert, SC asked in Civil Litigation and Personal Injury for South Carolina

Q: How can I recover belongings from a friend's house in SC?

I visited my friend's mom's house and left around $200 in jewelry, $175 in clothes, and $100 in toiletries there a week ago. I've been trying to retrieve these items, but my friend keeps giving me excuses and hasn't returned them. I recently texted her and warned that I would contact the police if my belongings aren't returned, but still received no response. She previously stole from me years ago, so I'm worried about recovering my things. What legal steps can I take to get my belongings back?

A: I don't have criminal law experience, but a civil lawsuit would not be well suited to solve this problem. It is a lengthy process designed for a harmed person to recover damages, not to force your friend to return your property. The police may be able to help in the short term, but it probably depends on her specific conduct.
