My friend just got a referral to general magistrate. He doesn't know what that means in his case. He is trying to see his daughter but the mother doesn't let him see or speak to her. He went to court to see what he can do they told him he needs to wait 4 to 8 weeks to get a hearing then he got the papers for mediation but he just received referral to general magistrate. What does that mean does he need a lawyer?

A: It is always a good idea to have a family lawyer help you to understand you rights and obligations. A General Magistrate is someone who is not a judge but takes some of the responsibilities of helping the judge. The GM will review any settlement agreement made by the parties at mediation and them recommend a course of action to the judge who can accept it or modify it.
