A: a writ requiring a person to be brought before a judge or court, especially for investigation of a restraint of the person's liberty, used as a protection against illegal imprisonment.

What? You do not know how to look things up in a dictionary?

A: Habeas Corpus is what we have in American legal system to combat what happened in Count of Monte Cristo, which is throwing someone in jail without knowing why they are in there. Habeaus Corpus allows someone to go before a judge and have a review on why they are charged and if there were any legal mishaps that happened during trial they can bring that up to a judge. Also, if there is new evidence that proves innocence that can be brought before a judge.
