Augusta, GA asked in Divorce for Tennessee

Q: Divorced in 1997 moved to GA for past 15 years. Still carry his last name. How can I have use of my maiden name?

I got divorced from my husband back in 1997 in Clarksville, TN. I asked my attorney for the use of my maiden name. However, my attorney allowed his attorney to draw up the papers and in the final decree it stated that I did not ask for use of my maiden name when in indeed I did. I told my attorney about it again and nothing ever changed. I left TN shortly after the divorce with the children and I came back to GA, my home state and have been carrying this name ever since. I have not remarried, but he did marry immediately after the divorce with the woman he cheated with. Can I ever have use of my maiden name again, since I have not used it since the age of 21 after I married him. Since I have been living in GA for the past 15 years now, is there some way I can get my last name change back to my maiden name (DAVIS), it would make my father proud because he is deceased now. Should I talk to an attorney here in GA?

A: You can change your name by filing a petition in Georgia for a name change. Anyone can change their name by paying a fee. It would have saved you the fee if it was in the Final Decree, but that is so old that you are better off just asking the GA court for a name change.
