Q: I will be 21 in 30 days i have court in 7 days for consumption. Will the court take into account I am almost legal?
I just got out of the army and moved here to live with my mother until work picks up in the spring. The night I was ticketed I feel that I was being very reasonable and safe. We had a designated driver, and we were going straight home from where we were drinking at. I served this country to protect our freedom but I don't get any freedom myself? I because I had a few beers I'm at risk of losing my license when I was in the back seat.
A: Because of your age, you should be eligible for youthful offender status. In order to receive YO, you would have to apply for it once you are in court. If you do not have a criminal history and the crime with which you were charged is non-violent, the judge should grant you YO. YO will give you a one time opportunity, after attaining the age of majority, to keep your record clean. Be sure to either hire an attorney or ask the court to appoint you an attorney who is familiar with YO, get them to explain it to you, and be sure to take their advice. It is very well worth taking advantage of the opportunity to apply for YO.
