Gainesville, FL asked in Intellectual Property for Florida

Q: Can I withdraw a piece of fiction accepted for publication?

I submitted a short story to a literary press for publication, and they accepted it. I immediately told them I wanted to withdraw the submission when they told me (a week after accepting the piece) that they "pay in copies" (no monetary compensation. The editor emailed me to tell me it was too late, that the magazine already had gone to press. Do I have recourse? They claim that the submissions page of their web site stated that they pay only in copies, and it may now, but I did not see that at the time I submitted, and I suspect they updated the page.
