Q: Helped a friend get an apt., i was not aware she got evicted, collections after me. What rights do I have?
A: What rights? Why don't you ask what responsibilities you have. The answer will depend on your "help" and whether you signed any documents.
If you acted as a co-signer, then you are liable for the debt. Co-signing is a bad deal and it was a red flag if your friend needed a co-signer for an apartment because it meant that she had a string of evictions behind her and this was going to be another. She gets evicted and leaves you holding the bag for the past due rent.
After you pay, you can then sue your friend in small claims, but chances are that you will not get anything unless she is employed and you can garnish her wages or bank account.
