Q: I added a garage to a house I was living in with intentions to buy. The owner has gone back on his word to reimburse
I was living in an unfinished modular home, owned by my wife's stepmothers husband. We had a verbal agreement that we would live there rent free for 2 years with the condition that I finished the inside, (paint etc) which I did. I also added a garage also with verbal agreement that I would be compensated for with the purchase of the home. At the 2 year mark the owner and I could not agree on a purchase price and I decided to move out while still on good terms. I have all the receipts for materials to build the garage and am not counting labor costs, considering the fact I lived there, however the owner has gone back on his word and refuses to repay me for the material list. Do I have a chance to recover this money? I have receipts for $19,500.00
A: You might be able to recover on the theory of unjust enrichment, but you should definitely consult with an attorney to discuss further.
