Q: I got an insurance ticket due to a car accident and my insurance was lapsed, but now have it, can the ticket be dropped?

A: I'm sorry to hear about your accident. Regrettably, insurance tickets are rarely dropped absent proof that you had insurance on the date of the offense. Only if the prosecutor is particularly moved by your circumstances can you hope for a dismissal of your insurance ticket. The best that you can hope for is a low fine and court supervision if you can show proof that you are currently insured. Once you get supervision, you will be required to get SR-22 2 by the secretary of state. Your insurance agent can review and explain this special mandatory insurance policy. If you aren't able to get court supervision, you will face a conviction which will suspend your license for around 3-6 months.
