Q: The contractor started the job without a contract or proposal. he walked off the job & sent us a huge bill.
We have a vacation home that needed renovation. We live about 1000 miles away (same state) We hired a contractor to disconnect and reconnect the house when it was raised. He verbally gave us a quote. We had asked for a written quote but did not get one. The raising of the house started moving along and we were caught up. We needed other work done but told him we needed a written quote. He never gave us a written quote but continued to do work without approval. After months of slowing down the project, We had hired another contractor to move the job along. We told the original contractor that he can do some work if he gave us a written quote. The original contractor walked off the job (claiming we insulted him) and sent us a huge bill. We do not have any written agreements with him.
What do you suggest?
A: I suggest that you go speak with an attorney about this, face to face, and preferably someone who knows the construction lien laws and cases.
