A: Truth be told, it depends. If it is Cook County, no, you will not need a lawyer in any way because the standard policy there is to dismiss these tickets IF you received a new non-expired license in hand.

If it is not Cook County, they may not dismiss it and may ask for you to return with a lawyer. Since it is not 12 months expired, it wouldn't be a misdemeanor punishable by fine or jail. Therefore, I don't think you will have a problem.

My recommendation would be to go to court and see what they offer. If they refuse to give dismiss it in Cook County or give you supervision in any other county besides Cook County, I would consider returning with a lawyer because those are very common results for these tickets in those regions. Otherwise, there is little value a lawyer will add other than appearing in court for you preventing you from needing to take the day off of work.

Hope that helps!
