Q: I was pulled over for speeding 34mph over the speed limit the highway. How much will the fine for the ticket cost in IL?
A:
In truth, it's hard to say. The reason being that intensity of prosecution varies greatly by county and even by courthouse within counties. Additionally, the range of punishment is very large which makes it even harder to give a definitive answer.
At 34 mph over, that is a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and/or $1,500 fine. Because this range is so great, it is hard to say what any given court will do. What I can promise you is that it is not eligible for court supervision in all counties in Illinois. In order to get court supervision, it will require some negotiation with the prosecutor to amend the charge to a lower level. At your current speed, this may be difficult/impossible depending on the county as the range for Class B speeding offenses is 26-34 mph over the limit so it is at the upper bound of a class B misdemeanor.
If you would like more specific details about what can reasonably be expected for a speeding ticket in terms of fines, I would contact a lawyer and schedule a free consultation by phone because quite frankly, there is no correct answer for the "cost in IL".
Hope that helps!
