Carpentersville, IL asked in Animal / Dog Law for Illinois

Q: Ex boyfriend wont give my dog back.

I baught a American Bulldog in September of 2005. All adoption paperwork and microchip is under my name. I didnt even know my ex when I purchased my dog. I let my ex watch him for me and now he wont return my dog. Since all adoption paperwork and microchip and vet bills are all under my name how do I legally get my dog back? I live in Illinois and the person with my dog is in Wisconsin. I already tried doing it with local police assistance in Wisconsin and they said they wont get involved in animal dispute. Please help.. I have had my dog over 10 years and I miss him so much and want him back home with me.

A: Sue him. Get an attorney to write a demand letter first, stating that he will be sued for replevin, civil theft, and conversion if he does not hand the dog over, if the facts indicate.
