Trenton, NJ asked in Collections, Criminal Law and Tax Law for New Jersey

Q: I think my landlord is committing tax evasion. He's scammed me and should not get away with it. Am I correct about this?

My landlord charges outrageously high regular monthly "donations" of the same amount each month (I thought donations were gifts). He refuses to take a check for his monthly "donation" because he doesn't want there to be proof of rent; he insists on being paid in cash. He's stated this to each of his 4 tenants. He also isn't allowed to rent rooms in his township (Lawrenceville, NJ 08648). He claims to be a pastor and that his house is a "ministry house" though he doesn't mention God or minister to anyone in the house. All he speaks about is money and how we could contribute to him by working on his house projects.

Before I moved in, he told me he would not kick me out since his house is a ministry house and he desires to help those in need. He has threatened me numerous times of kicking me out just for telling him I don't like him banging on my door to wake me up at 7:00 AM. Now, I am behind on my "donation" because i lost my job. He's trying to have me vacate my room in only 2 wks.
