Asked in Civil Rights for Florida

Q: I have been stopped twice by the same grocery store because of my misshapen abdomen. What are my legal remedies?

On December 6, 2015 at approximately 16:00, my wife and I were shopping in your store. I approached an employee who stocking shelves and asked her where I might find coconut water.

The very first thing that came out of her mouth was, “What’s under your shirt? Pick up your shirt.”

I could hardly believe my ears and asked her to repeat it and she did. I was dumbfounded, shocked (and I am not being melodramatic) because this makes the second time my medical condition was ‘called out’ and this time it was in the middle of an aisle with customers easily within earshot. I became very angry and asked her if she was saying I was stealing. She said she wasn’t but still wanted to know what was under my shirt. I angrily told her that this was the second time (this store) had embarrassed me in this manner and demanded to speak to a manager at which point she told me she is the manager.

There is more but I've run out of room.

A: This wouldn't be a civil rights issue. I dont see anything worth the time and expense of a legal action in this situation. I wish I could offer more, but the best I have is that I would recommend frequenting a different store.
