Paterson, NJ asked in Landlord - Tenant for New Jersey

Q: I an being evicted for $16,244,for non payment on my apt. The partner cashed my checks can I counter sue

I received an eviction for $16,000 in back rent. One of the partners was cashing my rent checks from the state. I have occupied this apartment since November 2014 they received a month and a half security and rent beginning in September 2014. When I moved in here in September I couldn't stay because they never told me the gas utilities were not installed on this house there were no meters and the house did not passed Inspections. I also have been working for one of the partners of the LLC since I moved in. I was a TRA tenant in the beginning, the state was making my rent payable to One of the partners instead of The LLC. I also never received the credit for Sept and Oct rent, security letter or my receipts of $2,000 I paid 2 weeks ago (I do have a text message from Danielle stating he would apply the $2000 to my rent). Can I counter sue

A: tenancy court only deals with eviction. civil suit must be filed in different part.
