Montclair, NJ asked in DUI / DWI for New Jersey

Q: I’m planning a fishing trip to Canada with my buddies and just learned a person in our party has a dwi.

He lives in a state where it was considered a moving violation - he paid all fines and never lost his license. Is it going to be a problem for him to go on the trip?

A: More information is needed to answer the question, and I would suggest that he takes a consultation with a lawyer who knows both immigration and DWI law in the State where he got the DWI

A: I agree with Mr. Aalsberg. More information is needed and this is really a Canadian immigration issue. But the specter of being kept out of Canada on a DWI, is real.

A: Canada has very strict entrance requirements. Any conviction for DUI will most likely prevent your friend from entering the country. He should consult a Canadian solicitor, or at least an American lawyer with experience in dealing with Canada's requirements.

A: From your description it does not seem like there would be a problem unless he skipped court and there is a warrant.
