Q: in joint custody is it illegal to with hold information from the other parent?
I have joint custody and have my son 50% of the time. and as of recently the mother is refusing to give copies of important information such as his social security card, health insurance ect.. what course can i take to gather this information? and is she breaking the law by doing this?
A:
Read the following two statutes. You can always contact the agencies directly from whom you need to get the information. If that fails, consider taking the mother into court to get her to share the information you need to perform your role as joint custodial parent. Just keep in mind that if the court doesn't think the joint custody is working out the court will terminate it and make one parent the custodial parent. Oregon Court's will not force joint custody situations to continue if they aren't working.

Parents’ duty to provide information to each other
Unless otherwise ordered by the court, both parents shall have a continuing responsibility, once a custody or protective order concerning the child is issued, to provide addresses and contact telephone numbers to the other parent and to immediately notify the other parent of any emergency circumstances or substantial changes in the health of the child.
