Gallatin, TN asked in Divorce for Tennessee

Q: Can we file for divorce ourselves if we own property?

My husband and I are filing for divorce and want to handle it ourselves, as it is uncontested and we have no children. We own a vacant lot that I'm willing to sign over to my husband, free and clear, but it's my understanding that TN requires an attorney to file if there's any property involved. If I sign a quit claim and we both agree that he can have the property, are we still able to file on our own? Thanks.

A: You are correct- there is no law requiring you to have an attorney- you can always represent yourself. If you sign a deed giving your husband the land, then you have covered it.
