If a friend is riding with you and you cause an accident you are liable. Florida Law holds the owner of the vehicle that causes an accident liable and well as the driver of the vehicle.
The best of precautions can come up short as you cannot control how other people drive. If someone else hits you, they will be liable but it is possible that your insurance still might pay out since your passenger could be injured. quite frankly it is too complex of a situation to ever avoid liability. The best that you can do is drive cautiously.
