A: Depends on what happens in traffic court and your driving record.

Find an experienced traffic lawyer in the county where this is going on.

A: Hello Asker,

Fortunately, this often is a reversible situation that traffic attorneys deal with if you are suspended. With that said, as my colleague has stated, speaking to a traffic attorney is important. The reason is that if you receive more tickets or are caught driving during the suspension, it is very likely you can suspend your license much longer.

In general, the rule for this type of suspension is based upon your age. If you receive two moving violations convictions for tickets issued both BEFORE your 21st birthday and within 24 months of one another, you will be suspended for 1-12 months. If you receive 3 moving violation convictions for tickets issued AFTER your 21st birthday within a year, you will be suspended for 1-12 months. In addition, if you have been previously suspended for moving violations under the age of 21 and subsequently receive another moving violation conviction, you can be suspended for 6 months.

These are the primary types of suspensions that can arise from moving violations. My recommendation would be to speak to a traffic attorney in a free consultation so that they can discern whether these apply to you and let you know your risk of suspension. If going into court is necessary, they can make that recommendation as needed.

I hope that helps and let us know if you have any additional questions!

Sincerely,

Jason A. Wilkins

A: Illinois utilized a point system with regard to traffic tickets. Currently, the Illinois Secretary of State's office assigns twenty points for EACH disobeying a stop sign violation where you are convicted of the offense. It does not matter that all your tickets were received on the same day if they apply to separate violations. These points are carried on your driving record for a number of years. Illinois suspends or revokes your driving privileges if you are convicted of three moving violations in a 12-month period, and if you are under 21, two moving violations in that period of time have the same effect. What this means is that you should never "pay a ticket" or plead guilty. Get yourself a lawyer who can persuade the prosecutor to dismiss some of these tickets and offer court supervision on one of them. Court supervision if successfully completed is not a conviction. Good luck.
