Virginia Beach, VA asked in DUI / DWI for New Jersey

Q: I got a DWI in NJ in 1998. I paid all the fines and did everything required.

20 years later, when I went to get a Virginia License, NJs say I have to get an assessment, go to a 16 hour class and go to counseling. I did this already but there are no records of it. They do show I paid approximately $10k. What can I do?

A: Because you already had a driver's license (NJ), VA won't issue you a VA license until you clear up the NJ issues. I suggest you go on this website but select NJ and ask a NJ attorney what you need to do to get back into good standing with the NJ DMV.

A: If you remember which county you completed the 16 hour counseling contact the IDRC in that county, they will have a record for the same. You should be able to procure it. Contact a New Jersey Attorney to request the records. I have done this for clients.
