Joliet, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: I got a ticket for aggravated speeding class b for going 27 over. Do I pay the $150 bond on the ticket before court date

I am confused because on the ticket it gives me options to please guilty or not guilty, etc. and to pay with each plea but I have a court date set up for this that hasn't happened yet so I am unsure as to whether I pay the ticket first or wait until after.

A: It is a mandatory court appearance. Speeding 26-34 mph over the limit is a Class B misdemeanor. You should not need to pay anything prior to the court date. The bond may list an amount but you were likely released on your signature alone. The options on the ticket are for offenses that do not require a court appearance.

A: Hello Asker,

The bond is not a fine that must be paid. Rather, it is a punishment that may be assessed against you should you fail to appear on your court date for this ticket. So long as you go to court, you shouldn't have to worry about that amount. With that said, Mr. Davis is correct in that this is a Class B Misdemeanor offense. It is a serious violation which can have a major impact on your driving privileges and insurance rates in addition to giving you a criminal record. For these reasons, it is often advised that you at least speak to a lawyer in a free consultation so as to know what the impact of this can be and what can be done to help avoid those damaging effects. In particular, for these types of offenses, lighter penalties like court supervision are not as readily available so it is important to know how these stricter rules affect you based upon the specifics of the ticket and your driving history.

I hope that helps and let us know if you have any questions!

Sincerely,
