Smyrna, GA asked in Gov & Administrative Law, Criminal Law and Family Law for Georgia

Q: Is it best to change my address now before the court hearing?

I got charged for 1st degree cruelty to child. I have a court hearing to see if my daughter can stay with her dad or my grandma. If she can go to her dad, we live together and I don't think I can see her. Is it best to change my address so her dad have a better chance to take her home?

A: Yes. If you miss a court date, due to not updating your address, you can be held on contempt for not showing up, and a warrant for your arrest will issue. Plus, your bondman may request to be released from the bond, because you violated its contract.

Having a lawyer representing you gives you the comfort that he or she is getting notice, and may "save" you from these bad consequences.
