Asked in Criminal Law and Traffic Tickets for Georgia

Q: From what I've researched, the fine for driving with a suspended license is $1000. Is there a reason mine was 2700

I was arrested for driving with a suspended license. I was unaware of the fact that they were suspended. The officer informed me that they were not required to serve me with any notification

A: For a first offense, the maximum fine would be $1,000. For a second or third offense, the maximum fine would be $2,500. There would also be statutory surcharges added to the fine that could account for the amount reaching $2,700. It's also possible there were other charges to which you plead guilty.

A: All criminal case fines in GA have a lengthy list of surcharges added to the base fine amount. This is one of the hidden "taxes" our Legislature has passed in the last 15 years that have saddled "undesirables" with revenue-generating assessments. DUI and other traffic offense violators are a common target for these type of taxes. Grabbing buckets of money here allows them to run their campaigns on a platform of "not raising taxes."

$2700 for ONE offense, seems high. You can go back to the court for an explanation, and breakdown. If they fail to do that, get a criminal defense lawyer involved, to assist you.
