Buffalo, NY asked in Bankruptcy for New York

Q: How do I find a reputable bankruptcy attorney?

We began work on our bankruptcy in 2016. Attorney has since closed his practice, saying he'd either refund the $1000+ we paid him, or he had a colleague willing to take on the case for the same fee (he'd transfer our records and the funds we paid to the colleague). We indicated we'd like to go with his colleague, asking for contact information. We have heard NOTHING since we indicated this choice, from him or from his colleague. We've called and left phone messages for him (he never answers) and sent repeated emails, all to no avail.

So now we are out the $1000+ and are faced with finding a new attorney, and coming up with the funds again. We are starting to get letters via regular mail from attorney's offices to the effect that "legal documents have been forwarded to the court for commencement of a lawsuit."

This is making me very nervous.
