Q: Can my landlord keep my security deposit?
I'm leaving my place soon, but I'm worried about my deposit. My landlord seems to be avoiding me and hasn't responded to any of my communications. He knew/knows that I'm leaving at the end of the month, and i even found a replacement tenant for him. My landlord is rumored not to be the most honest man, and i'm worried he has no intention of paying me back. I kept the place really wellkept/clean, but there is a small indent on my bedroom door (caused by me). Wondering if 50-100 dollars worth of damage to a replaceable door could be grounds to withhold my entire deposit. I would understand a partial deduction and even encourage it, but to keep all of it over a cheap door doesn't seem fair. can he keep it? Should i try and fix the door myself? first time renter here...
