Kingsport, TN asked in Adoption for Tennessee

Q: Does your attorney leagally have to keep in touch with you with updates on your case once you have retained them?

We retained an attorney in July, so that my now husband could adopt my son. She has since been unavailable. She does not return calls or emails for days or weeks at a time. She has also told us we have had two separate court dates, but when we called the court to see if we are on the docket (bc she would not return our calls), nothing has ever been filed. We were also told that a legal ad would run in the month of October through mid November, and that also never happened. She has not been honest with us nor kept in touch. We had no idea the legal ad had never been ran until we had another attorney run the names involved through a nationwide data base. Is the lying and not keeping us updated illegal on her part? Is there anything we can do?

A: You can contact the Board of Professional Responsibility. They have a consumer complaint resolution process to help legal consumers. Best of luck!
