Clemson, SC asked in Criminal Law and Federal Crimes for Georgia

Q: My brother (18 yrs) allegedly committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against someone 40-50 years of age.

Both parties are white. My brother is believed to be mentally ill/ and or using mind altering drugs. He has a public defender, should we spring for a private lawyer? Additionally, what is likely to happen now? He is not yet booked into jail.

A: I always encourage clients to hire private attorneys to represent them. Most private attorneys will have fewer than 50 cases to work on while public defenders typically have 250-300 cases at a time.
