Asked in Adoption for Louisiana

Q: I’m 32 years old and living in Louisiana. What would I need to do to be adopted legally by my step father?

My mom and stepdad have been married since I was 4. My stepdad is the one who has raised me. I have not spoken to my birth father in 7 years.

A: It's called an adult adoption. While it's less complicated and time consuming as other kinds of adoptions, there is a specific procedure that must be followed for it to be valid; therefore, I recommend that you hire an attorney familiar with the process to do this for you. Give me a call and I'll be happy to discuss the matter with you further, including potential costs.
