Middle Village, NY asked in Probate for New York

Q: I'm sole executor in grandparents will who died 8 yrs ago.I only found 28K in bonds recently. How do I apply in NY court

When my grandparents passed away 8 years ago the only assets they had were the aforementioned bonds, which I could not locate. As a result, I never followed up in Probate court because there were no other assets. I recently discovered that my grandfather hid the bonds in a picture frame, so I'd like to cash those out now since they have fully matured. The bonds are in their name but as I stated, I am the sole executor of the will. My mother (their daughter) was estranged 25 years ago and passed away last year (I do not have her death certificate because she hadn't communicated with me or my grandparents since the 1980's). My grandparents specifically mention this in the will. So I'd like to know how to apply to the NY State courts so that I can cash in the bonds. I'd also like to know if there will be any problems or penalties incurred because I would be filing 8 years after their death.

A: For this amount of money, you can do a voluntary estate. Ask the clerk. It is meant to be done without a lawyer.
