Saint Paul, MN asked in Traffic Tickets for Minnesota

Q: I want to go to court and try to get it dismissed so it won’t go on my record (record is clean first ever ticket)

I got a Driving without a MN drivers license and I was wondering if I should pay the fine or make a datebook for court. I have a very clean record first ticket in my life and am 19 years old is it possible to get my ticket dismissed like asking them if I can do community service hours ?

A: You should absolutely go to court. If you don't have anything else on your record, you should be able to do something so that it does not go on your driving record so long as you pay a fine/costs and don't get any additional tickets for a year to six months. Well worth the trip to court.

A: If you "just pay it" without going to court to fight it, then it will go on your record as a conviction. Most will want to avoid that by setting up a court appearance date. When that day comes, you or your lawyer can discuss an outcome that would avoid a conviction with the prosecutor. That may involve a deferred prosecution with conditions for a year or less, such as "no same or similar violations" and payment of court costs.
