Asked in Child Support for Georgia

Q: I pay child support for my son & daughter. My son is 18 and has graduated H.S. How do I modify payments to exclude him?

Does DCSS automatically stop child support for him when he turns 19?

A: The easiest way is to file a modification case in Superior Court.

A: No, they won't automatically stop payments for him. You need to file to modify child support. If your ex is reasonable, you may be able to to this as an uncontested modification of support, and the judge can sign a quick consent order. If not, it still wouldn't be a long case, it just would delay it a bit. Support continues at the same rate until it is modified though, so you need to get this taken care of ASAP. Talk to an attorney about assisting you. It is well worth the money for the expertise.
