Asked in Car Accidents for Tennessee

Q: left the scene of the crime, later turned myself in. Was charged with not reporting an accident immediately?

I merged over into a semi trucks wheel, he didnt appear to be stopping or attempting to get off on the side of the road so I kept driving. I could see I had damage but wasnt aware how bad it was. I later turned myself in to the state trooper who handled the report. He stated there was minimal damage to his semi, that I had got the worst part. And he was not injured. I explaibed to the state trooper I was scared I've never been in accident before and he didnt apper to be stopping so I just kept driving. I asked if I was going to jail, the state trooper said no that's why he gave me a court date. I than asked if at court would I be going to jail for leaving he again said no I wouldn't be going to jail. Overall I am confused on my charge.. my slip states "failure to report accident immediately" what should I except when I go to court???

A: If there were no personal injuries you are not going to jail in all likelihood. There will be a fine and court costs. You may want to take a lawyer - as you may be entitled to diversion.
