Morgan City, LA asked in Criminal Law and Civil Rights for Louisiana

Q: I need to see if I can possess a firearm.?

I have called the district attorneys office, the sheriffs office and the wildlife and fisheries enforcement department. No one is willing to give me a direct Answer to my question. I'm wanting to go hunting and take my wife and children with me. It's something I love to do. On my record I have a misdemeanor possession of Marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. I was 18 and that's 10 years ago. 9 years ago I had theft of a motor vehicle over $500, I had stolen a motorcycle. I'm not on probation for either of these charges anymore and have not gotten into any other trouble since then. Can I possess a firearm since some laws have changed?

A: 9 years ago you had a felony conviction. In one more year you are, under state law, allowed to own a firearm. Under federal law, you are not. Which means you can get a state, but not federal, hunting license and are still subject to arrest for a federal offense.
