Chicago, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: Can you receive 2 tickets for the same thing even though you didn't receive the first ticket copy? Should I fight it?

I forgot to buy my new license plate sticker. I received a physical ticket on my windshield 11/20/18 and at that time I realized I needed to buy my new sticker, so I did. A month later I received a notice stating that I actually have two tickets for the expired license plate sticker. The first one I was never made aware of because I didn't receive the physical copy of the ticket on my windshield like the one received on 11/20/18. The first ticket was on 11/13/18 which i didn't know about and the second was on 11/20/18 which is the only one I was aware of because of the ticket on my windshield and I fixed the problem by buying the new plate sticker right away. I almost feel like it was the same officer that just wanted to hand out more tickets and that's why he didn't leave my a physical copy of the first ticket on 11/13/20. The tickets in illinois take about a month to reach the driver through mail and I'm sure the officer knows this.

A: The ticket is valid. It can be served in person by mail or left on the windshield. You should bring proof to court that you have a valid registration and paid a ticket once. These are not legal defenses but may result in a better outcome

A: Go to court on both tickets and show proper registration. Hopefully they will both the dismissed.
