Aurora, IL asked in Traffic Tickets for Illinois

Q: Best approach to police officer writing down wrong information on citation?

I posted a question about what to expect from speeding in a school zone yesterday, and today we realized the cop wrote down the wrong information on the citation. He had my license with him but he pulled up my fathers record and wrote his information down instead (we have the same name). Wrote down his name, license number, DOB, and all of that instead of mine. What is the best approach to this? The court date is next month.

A: Your best approach is to hire an attorney to assist you with this matter. That attorney will likely request a trial date and attack the credibility of the officer during trial. The sooner you hire an attorney the better.

A: I agree with Mr. Ooink - the officer’s credibility may be undermined at trial using the various errors on the citation.
