Q: Jailed for Civil Contempt -- Back Child Support
Woman was in a "homeless" shelter and working very hard to get her life back together after several difficult situations (generally not of her own making or choosing). She was employed and making real progress. Her path to getting out of her situation was totally disrupted by her being JAILED for civil contempt related to back child support. She was really making progress at the time this happened, but she has essentially no resources, no money and no way to pay child support. He ex husband is obviously vindictive because he must have know this. How long can she be kept in jail? She has zero resources to purge herself of or to challenge the civil contempt "charge." This is in Georgia.
A: She was jailed because the court found she had resources to pay child support and she chose not to.

A: I agree with my colleague. She had court orders and didn't follow through with the, which can lead to being arrested. Once she was working again it would have been wise to start paying on the child support. -Homer P. Jordan IV, Esq. 404-620-1558 HomerJordan.com
