It's difficult to offer a "yes" or "no" answer. As a general matter, a common reason why lawsuits could take a long time is that the parties are not able to arrive at a figure they mutually agree upon. Since there was surgery here, the injuries could be complex and a source of differing opinions as to their monetary value. That's only conjecture, though.
