Thornton, CO asked in Criminal Law for Colorado

Q: What happens in court?

I was at target with my two children. I am really stuggling and couldn’t afford baby food for them, diapers, wipes, bottles and binkys for them etc. They caught me walking out and told me to go to the back with them as I did. They took my info down and called the police and the police came and were very nice. They wrote me a ticket for a court date. I believe I stole like $290-$310 worth of baby stuff. I’m struggling with what will happen at court my anxiety level is already so bad as I just had my second child a few months ago. What will happen in court? Will they take my children away? Or go to jail? This is my first time ever doing something like this I couldn’t afford all the formula etc. help!!!! i have only gotten one speeding ticket ever and one running a red light ticket in HS. I’m 21.

A: Based on the information you provided, you should not be worrying about jail or having your children taken away.

It sounds like you will probably qualify for a court-appointed attorney (no cost to you). The attorney will get you through the process and help you resolve the situation.
