Q: How do I get a restraining order against someone in a different state? Is it possible under the VAWA?
I was in a very emotionally abusive and manipulating relationship with my ex for 4 years. I finally got out of the toxic cycle and I am happier than ever. However, he never stopped bothering me and sending me threats. From constant emails, texts, phone calls, bullying me on social media, he has done it all. The constant of it stopped, but he still pops up every few weeks. I have created all new social media but I haven't changed my phone number.. it's just unfair. Why do I have to change my whole life around, while he stays exactly the same. And I'm pretty sure even if I did change my number, he would find some other way. He always texts me from fake numbers and says disgusting things. He lives in New York and I live in Georgia. I have tried to get a restraining order but no one takes it seriously because he doesn't live in Georgia. I spent over an hour talking to a lawyer, all she really did was tell me everything I needed to change in my own life, rather than any action against him

Thats crappy that a lawyer acted as a therapist before answering the pending question, but I get it. That lawyer probably wanted to help you the best way they knew how, and that is by showing you their experience.
In short, you can file an order against the person in their state. That CAN be done by and through your local court, but it is super complicated and difficult to get all those folks aligned and on the same page.
Likely you need to get a NY lawyer to represent you. Contact a local bar where the person lives and explain the situation. With verified complaints, solid evidence and a good lawyer you should be able to acquire a protective order in the person's jurisdiction, and then Full Faith and Credit will make it enforceable there for violations which manifest in GA.
Hope that helps and good luck!!
