Hot Springs National Park, AR asked in Immigration Law for Arkansas

Q: If I couldn’t afford to renew green card in 2017, and I just submitted my application for citizenship in 2020, is it ok?

I became resident in 1987 at 3 years old. I renewed every 10 years, but in 2017 I couldn’t afford to. I’ve been married to a u.s. citizen for 14 years. I’m a stay at home mom with 3 kids. I have never been arrested and have lived a simple life. I just put in my citizenship application yesterday while my green card is still expired. Is this going to cause any problems?

A: It is USCIS policy for citizenship applicants whose cards have expired or will expire within six months to file the I-90 and submit a copy of the receipt notice. You can file without that but you will likely get a request for it.
