A: Social Security provides monthly survivor benefits to certain eligible family members, including an unmarried child of the deceased who is younger than age 18, or up to age 19 for a full-time student in an elementary or secondary school, or if the child is age 18 or older with a disability that began before age 22.

Also, a surviving spouse or child may receive a one-time special lump-sum death payment of $255 if they meet certain requirements.
