Asked in Landlord - Tenant for Virginia

Q: Can my boss take my rent out of my paycheck to give to my landlord when they have nothing to do with eachother?

Landlord went down to my job and asked my boss to take my rent out of my check! Isn't that against the law

There's no contracts or anything between the two of them..they don't even know eachother!

A: No, your boss has no obligation or responsibility to give your wages to your employer. If that happens, you could sue your boss for unpaid wages since you never got the funds. If you decide to retain an attorney, I'm sure anyone who responds would be happy to help. Good luck.

A: Your employer is violating your rights. You should call the office of the Magistrate for the county/city in which your employer is located and file a formal Complaint. Your Landlord has no right to have your employer withhold your wages and pay them over to the Landlord, unless there is a Garnishment of wages summons that was filed and served on your employer and you.
